Wow, I can’t believe that another year has begun! 2013 has been another eventful year for our family, full of ups and downs, adventures and challenges. David was laid off and therefore there was a lot of uncertainty throughout the year. We moved out of our house in August and spent a couple of months with my aunt and uncle. In October we made the moved to Oliver so that David could start a job at Constellation Brands. I didn’t send out a Christmas letter this year (since we don’t have a printer with us), so I figured I would post a review of our year in photos. Most of these images have found their way on the blog at some point, others have been left on my computer. It always amazes me how looking through images helps be experience thankfulness all over again. As I looked through my photo files and uploaded images for this post, I was continually blown away by the beauty that I see in our life. Even though this year has been a challenging one in many ways, I can’t help but feel blessed beyond measure. My heart is overflowing with thankfulness and joy. I thank God everyday for the gifts that he has given our family, even the ones that don’t feel like gifts at all. I am always reminded to “be joyful always, pray continually and give thanks in all circumstances.” If this past year were to have a theme, this would be it. Hoping to continue this into 2014.
I love this quote by Kay Warren, “Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life, the quiet confidence that ultimately everything is going to be alright, and the determined choice to praise God in every situation.”
January: Time spent at home with family. I taught a series on working with light at the Moms with a Camera club that lasted from January to February. I really appreciated how this continued to challenge me to use my camera in new ways and document my everyday life. I also started this new blog as a better way to show photos and work towards my photography goals.
February: Lots of time at home with family. Major highlight: David and I went on a Caribbean cruise (without the kids). Thankfully we prepaid for this vacation as well as our trip in March, if we hadn’t we likely wouldn’t have gone.
March: During Spring Break we took a road trip to San Francisco, Palm Springs and Santa Monica. Sarah also learned her ABC’s.
April: Calvin learned his ABC’s too, so he was rewarded with a trip to the candy store, just like Sarah. I was also privileged to lead our church’s women’s retreat.
May: We enjoyed some unusually warm weather, which meant that I was able to embrace the golden hour with the kids and practice photography a little more. We also attended the annual South Abbotsford Church fishing derby at Loon Lake, a tradition that we have loved since Sarah was a wee baby.
June: The beginning of summer days. My mom and Gord got married at the end of the month which was super exciting for our family! I also went on a mini one night vacation with Sonja to Vancouver to practice Street Photography.
July: Oh how we love the summer! We got to spend a weekend with Barrie and Merel and watch them participate in a triathlon. We continued the tradition of raspberry picking and swimming at the Siemens. The kids also participated in day camps for a week. David volunteered as Dirty Darrel! This was also my week to work on redoing my website, www.dolcettodesigns.com with a new card customizer detail.
August: We moved out of our place in Surrey and in with the Klassen’s. We went on a family camping trip to Beaver Lake just outside of Kelowna.
September: Sarah started kindergarten! I still can’t believe how mush she is growing, just so proud of her! I realized that the rest of my September pics are on the laptop, so this will have to do.
October: On Thanksgiving weekend we moved to Oliver in the south Okanagan. We went apple picking, visited the pumpkin watch, went for walks along the river and enjoyed having mom over for a visit. We also went to Abbotsford to celebrate my Opa’s 90th birthday.
November: We had a visit from Michael & Rebecca, Debbie and Steven as well as mom & Gord. November was a month full of adventuring whenever possible. I also worked through a self portrait project throughout the month, what a great experience!
December: Our family seemed to get hit with a ton of sickness this month (several cases of the flu, lots of colds, an ear infection, cuticle infection, a case of impetigo and now I have shingles). Despite the sickness, we had a great month of advent leading up to Christmas. We were also blessed with a wonderful Christmas with family in the lower mainland.
We’re looking forward to what’s in store for 2014. We honestly have no idea what’s to come! It’s a little scary and really exciting!
